Short answer: the only way to be sure a game key is genuine is to redeem it on the official platform (Steam, Microsoft or PlayStation). A genuine key adds the game to your library straight away. Before that point you can lower the risk by choosing the right type of seller, matching the platform and region, and not revealing the key until you are ready to activate it, because at many stores revealing the key ends your refund right.
No third-party site, Digidang included, can check whether a key is valid without redeeming it. This page compares buying routes by who stands behind the key, then gives you checks you can follow. Sources were checked on 6 October 2026.
Comparison table: how well each buying route backs the key
| Buying route | Who stands behind the key | Price | Delivery time | Local payment methods | Refund policy | Indonesian language |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official platform store (for example Steam) | The platform itself, you buy the licence directly | Official price, Steam shows rupiah | Instant, no key to redeem | Whatever your account checkout shows, or via Steam Wallet codes bought with an e-wallet | 14 day refund if played under 2 hours (Steam) | Yes |
| Official reseller (for example Fanatical, Green Man Gaming) | A reseller that buys from publishers (Fanatical, GMG) | Discounted official price, in USD | Key appears in your account after payment | Cards and PayPal, no Indonesian e-wallets | Lost once the key is revealed. Fanatical 14 days, GMG 7 days (Fanatical, GMG) | No |
| Marketplace (for example G2A, Eneba, Kinguin) | Independent sellers, the platform mediates disputes | Varies per seller, often cheaper, plus service fees | Depends on the seller listing | Eneba accepts OVO, DANA, ShopeePay and QRIS. Others depend on the checkout country | Mainly for invalid or used keys. Eneba 14 days (rules), Kinguin 24 hours for unclaimed keys (rules) | Eneba yes, G2A not verified by us, Kinguin no |
| Sellers on social media or chat | Nobody | Often the cheapest | Depends on the seller | Usually a direct transfer to the seller | No formal refund route | Depends on the seller |
The pattern is clear: the closer the seller is to the publisher, the stronger the guarantee, but the price is rarely the lowest. Marketplace savings are paid for with protection that only covers specific cases and comes with tight deadlines.
Seven steps to make sure the key you buy is genuine
- Know the seller type. On a marketplace, open the seller profile and check the rating and number of completed sales. New sellers without reviews carry more risk.
- Match the platform. A Steam key will not work on Epic, Xbox or PlayStation. Make sure the platform on the listing is where you play.
- Read the region label. Steam explains that region restrictions on CD keys are set by each publisher, and if you see "Game not available in your territory" you must ask the seller for a refund because Steam Support cannot help (Steam region restrictions).
- Be wary of prices far below other stores for the same game and region, especially when a seller asks you to pay outside the platform.
- Do not reveal the key until you are ready. Eneba, Fanatical and Green Man Gaming all limit refunds once a key has been viewed or revealed.
- Redeem right away on the official platform. Steam: Games menu, then Activate a Product on Steam (Steam guide). Xbox: redeem.microsoft.com. PlayStation: PlayStation Store redeem page. A genuine key adds the game to your library immediately.
- Keep evidence and claim before the deadline. Screenshot errors such as "invalid" or "already used", keep the payment receipt, and raise it with the store you bought from. Steam does not refund CD keys bought outside Steam.
When buying from the official store makes more sense
- The price gap with the marketplace is small, so the risk of a bad key is not worth the saving.
- You are not sure you will like the game. Steam's 2 hour refund does not apply to keys bought elsewhere.
Digidang itself does not sell keys. The Buy Now buttons on Digidang lead to G2A, so every step above applies to purchases made through Digidang too. Details are on Is Digidang Safe?.
FAQ
How can I check if a game key is genuine before buying?
Before buying you cannot be fully sure. What you can check is the seller type, seller rating, platform and region label. Certainty only comes when the key is redeemed on the official platform.
What are the signs of a bad key?
The platform rejects the key with a message such as invalid, already used or not available in your territory. If that happens, screenshot the message and contact the store you bought from before its refund deadline ends.
Can Steam help if a key from another store does not work?
Not with a refund. Steam states that it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, such as CD keys, so the claim goes to the seller or marketplace where the key was bought.
Does revealing a key on a marketplace remove my refund right?
Usually yes for a change of mind. Eneba only refunds before the code is viewed or when the key is invalid or already used, and resellers such as Fanatical and Green Man Gaming also refuse refunds after a key is revealed.
