What is a global key?

A global key is a game activation code that the seller lists as redeemable in any country, because the publisher set no country restriction on that batch of keys. Region rules on Steam keys differ per publisher, so the global label is a seller claim, and the activation screen on the official platform gives the final answer.

Steam Support says that "region restrictions on CD Keys vary by each individual publisher" and that there is "no standard or universal restriction placed on retail games" (Steam Support, Region Restrictions on Steam). On Digidang, the region shown on a product page is a catalog label, not a country whitelist from the publisher.

What is a regional key?

A regional key is a game activation code that only works on accounts in a defined group of countries, for example Europe (EU), Southeast Asia (SEA) or one single country. The publisher sets the allowed country list for each product. Redeeming it on an account outside that list fails, and Steam then shows a territory error.

Steam describes the error "Game not available in your territory" as what you see "if you have purchased a regionally restricted copy of a game and you try to register its CD Key in a different region" (Steam Support). What is a SEA key?

A SEA key is a regional game key meant for accounts in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is part of Southeast Asia, but the exact list of allowed countries is set separately for each product, so an Indonesian buyer should confirm that Indonesia is covered by the listing or packaging before paying for or redeeming the code.

On Digidang, variants whose web address ends in global-sea, such as Elden Ring Steam Key (Global SEA), carry the catalog region SEA. Treat them as SEA keys, not as worldwide keys, and ask the seller for the country list when the listing does not show one.

What is a region lock?

A region lock is a restriction that stops a game key, a gifted game or a gift card from being redeemed or used outside the countries it was sold for. The platform enforces it when you redeem the code. On Steam, a key used in the wrong region returns the error "Game not available in your territory".

Steam adds that if you do not live in the designated region "you must contact the seller for a refund", and that "Steam Support cannot offer refunds on CD Keys purchased from 3rd party retailers". For region restricted Steam gifts, "using a proxy or VPN to disguise your location is strictly against the Steam Terms of Service and may result in restrictions on your Steam account" (Steam Support).

What is a CD key?

A CD key is a unique code of letters and numbers that proves you bought a game and adds it to your account when you redeem it. The name comes from codes printed on the packaging of boxed PC games on disc. After a digital purchase, the same kind of code usually arrives by email instead.

Steam defines a CD key as "a printed combination of letters and numbers, found on a card, sticker, or disc included with your game's packaging", adding that for online purchases it "is usually included in the emailed purchase receipt" (Steam Support, Retail CD Keys). Steam keys are "single-use, unique, alphanumeric codes" (Steamworks documentation), so a key that was already redeemed returns a duplicate code error.

What is a gift card region?

A gift card region is the country or currency that a store gift card or wallet code was issued for. The card only adds balance to an account set to that same country or currency. Google Play, Apple, PlayStation Store and Steam all apply this rule, so a United States card cannot top up an Indonesian account.

Google Play gift cards "may only be redeemed and used in the country and currency in which they were purchased" (Google Play Help). Apple says you "can't redeem Apple Gift Cards, App Store Cards, or App Store & iTunes Gift Cards outside of the country or region of purchase" (Apple Support). PlayStation voucher codes "are country specific (unless otherwise stated on the Voucher Code)" (PlayStation voucher terms), and Steam limits wallet code redemption "to be in the currency of your Steam wallet" (Steam Support, Steam Wallet).

How to check the region before you buy

  1. Read the region field on the listing (Global, SEA, EU and so on) and look for a written list of allowed countries.
  2. Match it with the country set on your Steam, PlayStation, Google or Apple account, not with where you are sitting today.
  3. For gift cards and wallet codes, also match the currency: an Indonesian Steam wallet in rupiah needs a rupiah code.
  4. Keep the invoice and do not share the code before you redeem it. If the platform shows a territory error, contact the seller, because the platform itself will not refund third-party keys.

Can I activate a SEA key on an Indonesian Steam account?

Usually yes, because Indonesia is in Southeast Asia, but only when Indonesia is on that product's allowed country list. The list is set per product, so check the listing or ask the seller before you redeem the code.

Can a VPN get around a region lock?

Do not try it. Steam says that using a proxy or VPN to disguise your location to redeem a region restricted gift is against the Steam Terms of Service and may lead to restrictions on your Steam account.

Is a global key the same as a Steam gift?
