EA Play is a paid Electronic Arts membership that opens a catalog of EA titles, trials of new releases, a member discount and monthly rewards. This guide covers the difference between its two tiers, the five platforms that sell it, the discount limits people rarely read, and what disappears the moment a membership lapses.

What EA Play Is and What It Is Not

EA Play is a subscription, not a permanent purchase. While the membership is active you can play anything in the collection called The Play List as much as you like. When the membership ends, that access stops. This is the fundamental difference from buying a game key, which we covered in how digital game keys work.

The official EA Play page lists four headline benefits: access to The Play List, trials of select new releases, member rewards that rotate every month, and ten percent off EA digital purchases. The first three stop with the membership. The fourth only applies while you are subscribed, so big shopping plans are best made while the membership is still alive.

A common misunderstanding: The Play List is not EA's entire catalog. It is a curated collection of released titles, and the list changes. The official terms state that the availability of member benefits and Play List titles may vary by platform and territory and may change from time to time. The catalog you see in Indonesia is therefore not guaranteed to match a screenshot posted by a player elsewhere.

What Is the Difference Between EA Play and EA Play Pro?

The difference lies in how deep the access goes. EA Play gives you a collection of already released titles plus limited trials of new ones. EA Play Pro gives full access to the best editions of EA's newest titles rather than a trial, and opens select new releases several days early. Both tiers include the member discount and monthly rewards.

The official pricing EA lists in the FAQ section of its EA Play page is US$5.99 a month or US$39.99 a year for EA Play, and US$16.99 a month or US$119.99 a year for EA Play Pro. Those are the figures shown on the United States page; what you see can differ with local currency and tax, a topic we unpack in our guide to VAT on digital purchases.

Choosing is simple. If you mostly work through older titles and occasionally sample a new one, the base tier is enough. If you always want EA's sports series from day one in its fullest edition, the Pro tier costs less than buying a deluxe edition every year. The Five Official Places to Buy EA Play

Each platform carries its own extra requirement, and the subscription does not travel between them. Diagram: Digidang team, built from the EA Play Terms.

The EA Play Terms name the selling platforms explicitly: the EA app on PC, Steam, the Epic Games Store, Xbox consoles and PlayStation consoles. Anything outside those five routes is a retailer code that still has to be redeemed on one of them. We break down redemption per platform in where to activate your game code by platform.

Two extra requirements are easy to miss. On Xbox, online features in certain Play List titles still require a Game Pass subscription, exactly as EA's document states. On PlayStation, the equivalent online features require PlayStation Plus. So an EA Play membership alone does not guarantee that a title's online mode is playable. Sony's plans are detailed in our PlayStation Plus guide, and Microsoft's tiers in our Xbox Game Pass guide.

What Happens When the Membership Ends

This is the part that surprises new buyers most. According to the EA Play Terms, when a subscription or trial ends, members lose access to membership benefits including Play List titles, game upgrades, and in-game purchases made in a Play List title, unless they separately own that title for the platform in question.

That last clause matters. If you buy a points pack inside a title you reached through The Play List, then the membership lapses and you do not own the title yourself, the contents of that purchase become unreachable. The fix is not subscribing forever. It is separating your spending: buy the title outright as a permanent key if you plan to spend heavily inside it, and use the membership to sample titles you may not continue.

After cancelling you can keep playing until the current paid period runs out. Cancelling early therefore does not cut short time you already paid for, and it prevents an unwanted automatic renewal. If a renewal has already gone through and you believe a refund is due, the usual steps are in our digital game refund guide, and our own policy sits on the refund policy page.

The Member Discount Limits People Rarely Read

The member discount is broad, but its exclusion list is spelled out in the official document. Diagram: Digidang team, built from the Member 10% Discounts section of the EA Play Terms.

The member discount covers EA digital purchases such as game downloads, points packs and add-on content. The EA Play Terms, however, list specific exclusions: Star Wars: The Old Republic on PC, certain partner titles distributed by EA, game time codes and subscriptions on PC, and backward compatible Xbox 360 titles on Xbox.

One more rule decides the outcome: discounts from EA may not be combined with other offers, nor with prepaid cards redeemable for the same content, unless EA expressly authorises it. Plans to stack a seasonal sale, the member discount and a gift card balance in one transaction therefore often fail. If your goal really is a lower price, comparing base prices between regions works better, which we cover in our guide to digital gift card regions.

Trial Rules Worth Knowing

Trials are why many people subscribe just before a big release. EA describes trials of select new releases as lasting up to ten hours of play. The official terms add that limited trials require a persistent internet connection, and that certain trials may be restricted to one per EA Account per game even if you hold memberships on several platforms.

The practical consequence is clear. Burning your trial hours on PC and expecting a fresh allowance on console is not a safe plan, because the restriction is counted per EA Account. Progress made during a trial can usually carry over if you later buy the title, but that depends on the title and platform, so read the notes on the title page before spending the first ten hours.

Play List titles also need an internet connection to confirm your subscription is active on first launch and periodically afterwards. For players on unstable networks that means long offline sessions can be interrupted. If you are planning a long trip without internet, owning a permanent key is safer than relying on a subscription catalog, and we explain the official key options in our beginner's guide to digital game keys.

The Mistakes That Happen Most Often

Five step checklist before redeeming an EA Play code, from matching the platform to keeping the proof of purchase
Five checks before redeeming a code, assembled from EA Play's own conditions. Diagram: Digidang team, built from the EA Play Terms.

The first mistake is buying a code for the wrong platform. A console EA Play code does not light up a membership on PC, because a purchase on one platform does not enable the service on another. The second is the wrong territory: codes from a different region are frequently rejected at redemption, a failure pattern we summarise in failed game top up and how to fix it.

The third mistake is treating every seller as equivalent. A subscription code is only safe when it comes from an official channel or a retailer that can show where its stock came from. How we check our own sourcing is described on our how we verify page, and safe buying habits are covered in safe digital product shopping tips. If you doubt a code's authenticity, work through how to check a genuine digital game code first.

Checklist Before Buying an EA Play Code

Before paying, confirm five things. The code's platform matches where you actually play. The code's territory matches both your EA Account and your platform account. An internet connection will be available when you first launch a Play List title. The end date is written down so you know when access stops. Your proof of purchase is saved before redemption, because a redeemed code cannot be reversed.

Once you have settled on a duration, a monthly plan suits chasing a single release, while a three month plan is cheaper if you play regularly. Both sit on our product pages for EA Play one month and EA Play three months. For players who also want Microsoft's catalog, we compare the cost in Game Pass versus PS Plus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is EA Play the same as owning the game?

No. EA Play grants access while the membership is active. When the membership stops, access to Play List titles stops with it. Buying a game key gives you a licence that does not depend on a monthly subscription.

What does EA Play officially cost?

In the FAQ on its official page, EA lists US$5.99 a month or US$39.99 a year for EA Play, and US$16.99 a month or US$119.99 a year for EA Play Pro. What you see can differ with local currency and tax. The figures come from the EA Play page.

Does one membership cover every platform?

No. The official terms state that purchasing EA Play on one platform does not enable EA Play services on another platform. Choose the platform you really play on before paying.

What happens to in-game purchases if the subscription lapses?

Access to Play List titles, game upgrades and in-game purchases made in those titles stops as well, unless you separately own the title for the same platform. That is a strong reason to buy the title outright if you plan to spend heavily inside it.

Does the member discount cover every EA purchase?

No. The official EA Play Terms carry a written exclusion list that includes Star Wars: The Old Republic on PC, certain partner titles distributed by EA, game time codes and subscriptions on PC, and backward compatible Xbox 360 titles on Xbox.

Can the member discount be combined with other promotions?

Not unless EA expressly authorises it. The official terms say discounts may not be combined with other offers, nor with prepaid cards redeemable for the same content.

Can a trial be repeated on another platform?

Not necessarily. The official terms note that certain trials may be restricted to one per EA Account per game even when you hold memberships on more than one platform. Do not count trial hours per device.

Can Play List titles be played offline?

Play List titles require an internet connection to confirm an active subscription at first launch and periodically afterwards, so long offline sessions risk being interrupted.

Is EA Play already included in a Microsoft subscription?

The official Xbox page lists EA Play as part of the Ultimate plan and the PC only plan. We break the tiers down in our Xbox Game Pass guide, including what separates each one.

Can I keep playing after cancelling?

Yes, until the paid subscription period ends. Cancelling early only switches off automatic renewal; it does not cut the remaining time.

What should I check before redeeming a code?

Match the code's platform and territory to your account, make sure an internet connection is ready, note the end date, and keep the proof of purchase. A redeemed code cannot be reversed.
