An Xbox Live Gold gift card is no longer sold under that name, because Xbox Live Gold became Xbox Game Pass Core on September 14, 2023 and later Game Pass Essential. Old Gold token cards still redeem for the equivalent amount of Essential time, according to Xbox Support. To subscribe today, use a regular Xbox gift card.

This guide covers the history from Xbox Live Gold to Game Pass Essential, what happens to Gold token cards you still own, how to pay for Game Pass with Xbox gift card balance, official plan prices, prepaid time limits, and the region rule. Every fact comes from Xbox Wire, Xbox Support, and Microsoft Support pages we opened ourselves on October 28, 2026.

Can You Still Use an Xbox Live Gold Gift Card?

You can still use an old Xbox Live Gold gift card. The Game Pass FAQ on Xbox Support answers that Gold tokens are still redeemable for the equivalent amount of Xbox Game Pass Essential time. An unused Gold card does not expire with the brand; it simply turns into Essential time instead of Gold.

Keep one distinction in mind. A Gold token card holds membership time, while a regular Xbox gift card holds money for your Microsoft account. If you search for an "Xbox Live Gold gift card" to buy a new membership today, what stores actually sell is an Xbox gift card with a cash value or a Game Pass membership code, not a Gold card.

If you redeem a Gold card while you are on Game Pass Premium or Ultimate, the time is converted based on the conversion ratio in effect. We cover that in the prepaid limits section below. For redemption steps on console, PC, and the web, see how to redeem an Xbox code.

A Short History: Gold, Core, Then Essential

Xbox Live Gold was the subscription for online multiplayer on Xbox consoles for many years. In July 2023, Xbox Wire announced that Xbox Live Gold would become Xbox Game Pass Core starting September 14, 2023, with online multiplayer, a collection of over 25 games, and member deals for $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year in the US.

Xbox Wire article titled Introducing Xbox Game Pass Core, Coming This September, with an opening paragraph calling Game Pass Core the evolution of Xbox Live Gold launching September 14

The same announcement said Xbox Live Gold members would automatically become Game Pass Core members on September 14 with no change in pricing. Games with Gold ended on September 1, 2023. Xbox One games claimed through Games with Gold stayed playable for Core or Ultimate members, while claimed Xbox 360 titles stayed in the library regardless of subscription, according to Xbox Wire.

The next change came on October 1, 2025. The October 2025 Xbox Wire post introduced three plans: Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Core subscribers moved to Essential automatically, Standard subscribers moved to Premium, and Ultimate subscribers stayed on Ultimate. The original page is no longer available on news.xbox.com, so we link the Internet Archive copy dated January 4, 2026.

How to Pay for Game Pass With an Xbox Gift Card

A regular Xbox gift card is the most common way to pay for Game Pass without a credit card. Microsoft's Spend the money in my Microsoft account page notes that only Xbox subscriptions can be bought with a gift card. So gift card balance works for Game Pass, but not for other subscriptions such as Microsoft 365.

The steps follow Microsoft's redeem a gift card or code guide:

  1. Match the card currency to your Microsoft account country. A US dollar card is for an account registered in the United States.
  2. Open the code redemption page in a browser, the Xbox app, or on your console, and sign in with the right Microsoft account.
  3. Enter or paste the gift card code. The balance is added to your Microsoft account immediately.
  4. Open the Game Pass page and choose Essential, Premium, or Ultimate.
  5. Pay with your Microsoft account balance. If the balance is short, add another gift card or a payment method.
  6. Check the subscription status in your Microsoft account services page, including the next billing date.

Per the Microsoft gift card terms, non-promotional account balance does not expire, and there are no fees for keeping a balance. That makes leftover gift card balance useful for your next renewal.

Official Game Pass Prices Today

The official US Xbox Game Pass page, opened on October 28, 2026, shows the following console plan prices. The same page offers the first 14 days for $1 to new members, then the regular monthly price.

Ultimate used to cost more. The October 2025 Xbox Wire post priced Ultimate at $29.99 per month. Later, a notice on Xbox Support said Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass pricing was lowered in select regions, with existing subscribers seeing the new price on their next recurrence date starting April 22, 2026.

At these prices, one $25 Xbox gift card covers two months of Essential at $9.99 on xbox.com, or one month of Ultimate with some balance left, before any applicable tax. Our Xbox Game Pass guide explains each plan in detail.

Choosing Essential, Premium, or Ultimate

Many owners of old Gold cards really need just one thing: online play on console. For that, Essential is enough, because it is the direct successor to Core, which used to be Gold. If you want a much bigger game library, step up to Premium or Ultimate. Use the quick guide below, which we put together from the feature lists on the official Xbox Game Pass page.

  • Choose Essential if you mostly play multiplayer games you already own, such as sports or shooter titles, and a smaller curated catalog is fine.
  • Choose Premium if you want a far larger library and do not mind waiting for Xbox-published games to join the catalog within about a year of launch.
  • Choose Ultimate if you want new games on day one, plus EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics included.

Every plan can be paid from Xbox gift card balance, so you can start on Essential and move up whenever you like. If you plan to upgrade, keep the conversion rule and prepaid caps in the next section in mind so the time you already paid for is not wasted. Before deciding, also check that the games you play most are actually in your chosen plan's catalog, since the library changes over time and differs by region.

One habit that helps: put your next billing date in your phone calendar. That gives you time to redeem a new gift card before the subscription renews, so you do not suddenly lose online multiplayer because your Microsoft account balance ran dry.

Prepaid Limits and Conversion When You Upgrade

If you hold several membership codes or old Gold token cards, watch the limits. The Xbox Support FAQ says that when you upgrade to Premium or Ultimate, prepaid time from other Xbox subscriptions can be applied, but Premium caps at 13 months and Ultimate at 36 months. Time beyond the cap is not credited.

Xbox Support FAQ answer on redeeming a code while subscribed to Game Pass: Premium up to 13 months of prepaid time, Ultimate up to 36 months, and Xbox Live Gold codes converted by the current ratio
Prepaid time limits and the conversion rule for Xbox Live Gold codes on Premium or Ultimate. Screenshot: support.xbox.com, captured October 2026.

The same page explains that if you redeem a code for Xbox Live Gold, Game Pass Essential, another Game Pass plan, or EA Play while subscribed to Premium or Ultimate, your time is converted based on the current conversion ratio. Xbox stresses that prepaid time conversion is final and non-refundable, and that ratios are subject to change.

Because the ratio can change and we found no fixed figure on the FAQ page itself, the safest approach is to total up your time before redeeming. Do not stack codes past the cap. If in doubt, redeem old Gold token cards while you are still on Essential, then upgrade afterwards as needed.

The Region and Currency Rule

Xbox gift cards are tied to a currency and a country. The Microsoft gift card terms state that denominations in a certain currency may only be added to a Microsoft account registered in a jurisdiction that recognizes that currency as official, and that account balance cannot be converted to another currency.

In practice, a US dollar Xbox gift card only suits a Microsoft account registered in the United States. Game Pass availability also varies by country, so check the official Xbox supported countries and regions page before you buy. Our explainer on digital gift card regions covers the general rule, and Xbox gift card digital code covers the code format.

Xbox Gift Cards and Game Pass at Digidang

Digidang is an affiliate marketplace for digital products. As a replacement for Xbox Live Gold, our catalog lists US dollar Xbox gift cards and Game Pass membership codes. Check the current price and availability on each product page.

We do not sell Xbox Live Gold cards, because the product has been renamed. If all you need is online multiplayer on console, Essential is the successor to Gold, and you can pay for it from Xbox gift card balance. For a comparison with PlayStation's service, read Game Pass vs PS Plus.

Safe Habits When Buying and Redeeming

  • Buy from trusted sellers. Cheap "Gold" codes from unclear sources may already be used. See safe shopping tips for digital products.
  • Keep your receipt. It makes a claim with the seller easier if a code fails.
  • Redeem on the right account. Check which Microsoft account is signed in before entering a code.
  • Total your prepaid time before stacking membership codes.
  • Secure the account. Turn on two-step verification, see how to secure a game account with 2FA.
